The used part of the plant is the underground Rhizone - ginger root - although it is not in fact a root.

It was one of the earliest spices known in Western Europe, used since the 9 th Century.

Ginger is a known diaphonetic, meaning it causes one to sweat.

It has long been recognised as having aphrodisiac properties and is mentioned in the Kama Sutra

Chinese women have traditionally taken ginger to combat morning sickness during pregnancies
